Small Acts Of Kindness. Tip #2 Compost Your Kitchen Waste

Every day we have the opportunity to change the world for the better.  Simple changes to our daily routine can make a huge impact on our environment.  We must each BE the change. Here at Organic REV we like to highlight the BIG ways that small acts of environmental kindness can change the world!

Tip #2 Compost Your Kitchen Waste

It doesn't seem like much and it is not hard to do - but saving and composting food scraps doesn't just improve your garden soil..it can impact the environment in a much larger way!

Composting kitchen scraps can have several positive impacts on the environment:

  1. Reduces Landfill Waste: Composting kitchen scraps means less organic waste goes to landfills. When organic matter decomposes in landfills, it does so anaerobically (without oxygen), leading to the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting reduces this methane emission. (Try our liquid organic fertilizer Eco-Organic - we make it entirely from upcycled Grocery Store waste!)

  2. Lowers Greenhouse Gas Emissions: By preventing the production of methane in landfills and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers (which are energy-intensive to produce), composting helps lower overall emissions and energy use.

  3. Improves Soil Health: Compost adds essential nutrients to the soil, improving its quality and fertility. This leads to healthier plant growth and increased soil carbon sequestration, which can help combat climate change.

  4. Encourages Sustainable Gardening Practices: Using compost can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, leading to more sustainable gardening and agricultural practices.

  5. Reduces Water Usage: Healthy, compost-rich soil retains water more efficiently, reducing the need for frequent watering.

  6. Promotes Biodiversity: Adding compost to the soil supports a diverse range of soil organisms, from bacteria and fungi to earthworms, which play critical roles in the ecosystem.

  7. Educates on Waste Management: Composting can raise awareness (both for ourselves AND for our children, friends and neighbors) about the impact of waste and encourage more sustainable living practices.

  8. Reduces Dependence on Waste Management Systems: By handling organic waste at home, composting reduces the strain on municipal waste management systems.

  9. Creates a Sustainable Resource Cycle: Composting turns waste into a resource, creating a closed-loop system that mimics natural ecological cycles.

  10. Supports Localized Waste Solutions: It enables handling waste locally rather than transporting it over long distances, which reduces transportation emissions.

In summary, composting kitchen scraps is a simple yet effective way to contribute positively to environmental health, promoting sustainable practices and helping YOU to grow healthy, beautiful and nutritious food!
